January 15-17, 2016. We started off the New Year with a Search and Rescue / Survival campout.
We were met by the red river with near freezing temperatures and woke up to similar conditions. We made a backpacking style breakfast and due to expectation of rain we started gathering firewood for a massive bonfire. In the process we hauled several large pieces of wood, a telephone pole, and we even chopped down a tree. Next we gathered resources and built shelters carefully insulating them to block out the cold of the night. In the evening we had a wonderful display of knots and wood grilled Tilapia. We then forgot all about the cold after lighting the massive pile of wood we had gathered and talking around the campfire. The night was below freezing and lasted for hours but eventually we made it to morning. In the morning we broke camp and left tired and exhausted. It was an exhausting campout and it took several days to recover but it was still a whole lot of fun.
